Models with larger rear wheels can be used on stairs, but only in two-wheel mode. For 2-in-1, 3-in-1, or 4-in-1 models, use them on stairs only in the hand truck position, never in cart or assist modes. The warning label states: “In assist and cart mode, all wheels must contact the ground at all times.” Lifting one end of a heavily loaded cart in 4-wheel mode can put stress on the frame and cause damage.
Safety Tips for Moving Heavy Objects:
- Ensure stairs are free of any trip hazards.
- Wear appropriate clothing, including protective shoes and gloves.
- Securely strap the load to the hand truck.
- Move slowly and maintain control over the cart and load.
- Keep the hand truck down gravity of the person controlling it. When moving downstairs, the hand truck goes before the driver; when moving upstairs, the driver goes before the hand truck.
- For bulky or heavier loads, enlist the help of a second person.
Wheel Specifications:
- Standard Cosco Hand Trucks have 10-inch diameter wheels, suitable for most staircases. Stair heights typically range from 7 to 10 inches. The general rule is that the sum of the rise and run (height and width) of a stair is equal to 18 inches. In other words, if a rise is 7", the run would be 11".
- Cosco Shifters have 5-inch diameter wheels and should not be used on stairs, regardless of mode.
Product Recommendations:
Cosco hand trucks are generally rated for residential use. For commercial purposes or specific stair-climbing needs, consider a product designed for that purpose. Cosco does not manufacture stair climber hand trucks and does not recommend using third-party stair climber conversion kits, as this would void the warranty.
