Whether you prefer a brand-new model or have discovered a classic one through resale, Retro Chair + Step Stools continue to make a bold statement. Cosco, like many companies in the 1940s, contributed to the war effort during World War II. Shortly after, we began producing the “Two-in-One” step stools. It’s always delightful to hear from customers who fondly remember the one from their grandmother’s kitchen. For more information on ordering replacement parts, click here.
Evolution Over 80 Years
While some aspects have changed over the past 80 years, the core concept of the chair remains the same. In 2003, the design was altered to facilitate smaller shipping sizes, requiring additional assembly. Unlike the original, which only needed the seat back to be bolted on, newer models are shipped flat. This change made the step stool chair more accessible to e-commerce and online customers.
Design Modifications
Another notable change is in the “swing away steps.” The original model had six legs and was lifted up and out on a hinge. In contrast, newer models feature eight legs and slide out on a track. Despite these tweaks, the chair’s size has not changed - it was and is smaller than a standard counter stool, with the seat height measuring 24".
Similarly, the Stylaire collection also underwent some modifications and was relaunched in 2019.
